mtl_2T_livingroom_495.190.jpgOne of the first decisions you make when planning a ski vacation is where to stay.  One of the first questions you will need to answer is do I want to stay in a hotel or a vacation rental (condo, private home, etc)?  And what's the difference anyway?

Generally, there are a few key differences between a hotel and a vacation rental.


Vacation Rental

  • One building with many hotel rooms
  • One room with one or two beds and bathroom
    On-site dining options.  Most hotels have a limited number of mini-fridges that can be reserved based on availability
  • Similar décor and furnishings in each room
  • Front desk located in the building to check guests in and out
  • Services & amenities such as daily housekeeping, dry cleaning, valet services, parking and on-site dining
  • Privately owned condominium, town home or private home that is available to rent
  • Bedrooms are separate from the living area (studios are the exception) and fully-equipped kitchen
  • Full kitchens allow for eating meals in the rental rather than at restaurants
  • Décor is unique to each unit

Vacation Rental Myths De-bunked

The Truth - Vacation rentals are often more affordable than hotels.  There may be additional costs such as cleaning fees, but the rental manager should make you aware of any additional fees prior to booking.  Often, the savings from being able to comfortably prepare meals and dine in the rental instead of eating out for every meal, outweigh the difference in cost.

Myth #2 - Vacation rentals only work if you have a large group and are staying for a week.

The Truth - The vacation rental lodging at all of our ski resorts includes options ranging in size from studios to large, private homes.  A studio condominium with a small kitchen may be a better option for some travelers who are more comfortable with a little more space than a traditional hotel room.  Also, there are options for vacation rental properties that do not require guests to stay for a minimum number of nights.  It is true that sometimes you will have to pay cleaning fees for shorter stays, but again, sometimes the cost of not having to eat out as often still makes this a more cost effective option.
